Your help is asked for to update information regarding ETRS89 by completing the Euref questionnaire.
Since 1987 EUREF has been developing geodetic activities related to the establishment and long-term maintenance of the European Terrestrial Reference System (ETRS89) and the European Vertical Reference System (EVRS). Furthermore, EUREF contributes to INSPIRE, where it is registered since the very beginning as a Spatial Data Interested Community (SDIC). The cooperation between EUREF and EuroGeographics is agreed in a Memorandum of Understanding since 2007.
A few years ago, recognizing the need to know, as accurately as possible, the status of the ETRS89 adoption by the different countries, EUREF and EuroGeographics carried out a survey with this purpose among the National Mapping and Cadastral Agencies (NMCA). At that time (2005) the great majority of the NMCAs provided the requested information, used by EUREF as an input for the following actions. The most important one, from the practical point of view, was the contribution to INSPIRE, more specifically to the INSPIRE Implementing Rule on Coordinate Reference Systems (CRS). See the results of the 2005 survey
Since 2005 changes have certainly occurred within the European countries, not only related to the status of adoption of the ETRS89 as official system but also to the approaches followed by each country under the legal and practical points of view. Furthermore, considering the fact that a registry for the CRS adopted in the different countries is needed for the implementation of INSPIRE, it would be useful to collect this kind of information as well.
In this process, the information on the description of national CRS in Europe and the transformation parameters between national CRS and the ETRS89, following the ‘ISO 19111 – Spatial referencing by coordinates’ standard, published under the responsibility of EUREF and EuroGeographics http://www.crs-geo.eu/ will be consequently updated. This includes also the coordinate values for more than 150 EPN sites in 26 countries which are published on the EPN web following the EUREF-TWG activity on monitoring official ETRF coordinates of stations of the EUREF permanent Network.
This action will also contribute to the member countries to know their situation with respect to each other and help them to take the actions needed to accomplish with the requirements. So, the intention of this letter is to launch an action in order to collect complete and updated information on the adoption of the ETRS89 and respective realizations by the European NMCAs as well as the status of use of EUREF products. The result of this enquiry will be made publicly available and will be reported at the next EUREF Symposium 2011 in Moldova.
