- Simple digital maps having a "flat" data structure, e.g. digitised maps. Digital Cartographic Models (DCMs) are suitable for display and plots purposes. In the context of GIS the DCM may be used as background information. The geometric form of the DCM is vector.

- The map is based on data acquired from space, e.g. remote sensing data. The data structure of space maps are raster. Space map may include details of topography and names.

- Hybrid of Digital Cartographic Model and raster data.
- Digital Landscape Model plus raster data:
- Hybrid of Digital Landscape Model and raster data.
- Register of geodetic points:
- A catalogue of geodetic control points, e.g. trignonometric points and levelling benchmarks.
- Register of land:
- A general term used for the designation of registers for ownership of land, e.g. cadastre and registers of territorial rights.
