Call for Survey Technical Engineer in CERN

9th December 2011

Contribute your survey and topography skills in a unique setting: join CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research in Switzerland) to work on the metrology and alignment of accelerators and detectors. A post for a Survey Technical Engineer in the Beams department, Accelerator and Beams Physics Group (ABP) at Large Scale Metrology Section (SU) is available.

The SU section of the ABP group is responsible for the metrology and alignment of accelerators and detectors. The section’s activities mainly comprise of the accurate positioning of accelerator and detector components, and the maintenance of geodetic networks, along the 63 km of beam lines and in the large experimental caverns at CERN. They also include the dimensional quality checks of the accelerator and detector components before their installation, from their manufacture, to their assembly and calibration, when classical workshop metrology is inadequate. The techniques used come from geodesy with some specific developments in order to achieve the high accuracy required. You will join a team that is in charge of the internal metrology and the "in situ" alignment of the components located along the accelerators and transfer lines, together with the associated networks. This team is also responsible for the "as built" measurements of equipment and buildings using laser scanner technology and of the maintenance and development, of one or more of the in-house software applications. If you are interested, please read more details in the full version of the call.
