EuroBoundaryMap

EuroBoundaryMap is a seamless geo-database at the scale 1:100 000 covering 40 countries. It contains geometry, names and codes of administrative and statistical units continuously updated by our members, the national mapping and cadastral agencies (NMCAs) of Europe. It links to the updated statistical LAU-and NUTS-codes for all local administrative units of the 27 member states of the European Union.

Data structure and content

EuroBoundaryMap v5.0 offers:

  • Geometry of all European administrative and statistical units from the most detailed local level to country level
  • Names (Unicode-UTF8 and ASCII) and unique hierarchical structured codes (UIDs) of all administrative units on each national administrative level
  • Unified coding system for all the administrative levels including designations of different national levels and the relations between them
  • Links to statistical LAU- and NUTS codes (as published for 2010) for all local administrative units of EU27
  • Distinction between land and water areas of administrative units (for example coastal water or lakes)
Change history

Changes from EuroBoundaryMap v4.0 to v5.0

  • Serbia has been integrated into EBM for the first time.
  • Administrative units on upper levels are restructured. The EBM data specification has been improved concerning coastal waters which can be integrated in the national contributions as territorial sea.
  • Updated metadata for the EBM v5.0 product according to INSPIRE Metadata Implementing Rules v1.2 and ISO 19115 as well as lineage-files and metadata for all national contributions based on ISO 19115.
  • Additional documents desribing the changes between v4.0 and v5.0 in more detail, the results of quality checks concerning EBM v5.0 and the matching results between SHN codes (geometry) and LAU2-codes provided by NSIs.
  • EuroBoundaryMap v5.0 is produced by using ArcGIS v9.3 and the standard data format is ESRI File Geodatabase.
Quality and standards The Data Product Specification has been improved according to ISO 19131. The quality of EuroBoundaryMap v5.0 product has been checked according to ISO 19113 and the results are documented. The metadata of EuroBoundaryMap v5.0 and all national contributions is based on the ISO 19115 standard and the INSPIRE Metadata Implementing Rules v1.2.
